Overview
The Property and Evidence Unit is staffed by one full-time Property and Evidence Custodian. Responsibilities of this position include:
- Processing, documenting, and storing evidence and other miscellaneous property turned in by police officers. This Unit ensures the items are properly packaged to meet State requirements and ensure the integrity of the "chain of custody" that begins with the officer acquiring the items.
- Providing evidence to the courts and/or attorneys. This includes photocopying, duplicating audio and video tapes, and maintaining the "chain of custody" on all items.
- Protecting and returning items that fall under the categories of "Safekeeping" and "Found Property" to the rightful owners.
Owners of "Found" or "Safekeeping" items should, if relevant, call the Property and Evidence Unit at (480) 474-5444 to schedule appointments to pick up their property.
After cases are adjudicated, the Property and Evidence Unit will attempt to locate the owners of evidence property that has been held for trial. If successful, this property will be returned. If not successful, the Unit will dispose of the property according to Arizona Revised Statutes and City of Apache Junction Ordinances.
