State Route 24 Opens

Drivers now have an outlet from areas south and east of Apache Junction with Thursday's opening of State Route 24 to Ironwood Drive.

The SR 24 project, which began in November 2020, runs east from the Loop 202, giving southeast valley drivers an alternative to connect to Gilbert and Mesa. The only north-south routes from San Tan Valley and Queen Creek to US 60 prior to the SR 24 opening have been Ellsworth Road and Ironwood Drive, through Apache Junction. However, Ironwood is in the middle of the "Superstition Vistas" development, between Ray Road and Elliot Road, which aims to add up to 11,000 housing units to the city of Apache Junction over the next decade. State Route 24 is the southern boundary of the city of Apache Junction from Meridian Road east.

The new stretch of highway that opened on Thursday covers four miles between Williams Field Road and Ironwood along the Maricopa and Pinal county line.SR-24-Ellsworth-to-Ironwood-map

The Arizona Department of Transportation lifted the curtain on the $77 million extension, which was constructed as an interim four-lane expressway to provide drivers with a much-anticipated new local route to help ease traffic demands in a growing area.

The SR 24 extension is not designed to operate as a freeway. In addition to traffic signals at intersections, the new roadway’s speed limit is 45 miles per hour.
